ROME, January 26 (Xinhua) — A boat carrying 51 migrants recently capsized in the Mediterranean Sea. One person survived, while the other 50 remain missing, local media reported.
The only survivor was rescued by a merchant ship and taken to hospital in Malta.
According to him, the boat departed Libya on Thursday and capsized the following day. The survivor clung tightly to the wreckage and remained afloat until rescued.
A search and rescue operation was launched following the accident. Fifty people remain missing.
According to the International Organization for Migration, 14 people have gone missing or died in the Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of this year. In 2024, the number of deaths and disappearances reached 1,873.
