BEIJING, January 26 (Xinhua) — China firmly rejects the US's baseless accusations related to the COVID-19 pandemic and reaffirms its firm support for the World Health Organization (WHO) and multilateralism, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.
On January 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr. issued a joint statement terminating the United States' membership in the WHO. The US Department of Health and Human Services also made unsubstantiated allegations about China's actions in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Answering a question at a daily press briefing, Guo Jiakun emphasized that China has acted openly, transparently, and responsibly in its fight against the pandemic.
"Since the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, China has put people and their lives first, cooperated with other countries, and overcome the difficulties that arose together, making significant contributions to international cooperation in fighting the pandemic," said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
As Guo Jiakun pointed out, there is a clear chronology of China's response to the pandemic, supported by reliable data that has been widely accepted by the international community and does not allow for distortion or slander.
The Chinese diplomat reiterated that China is firmly opposed to the politicization of the pandemic and emphasized that attempts to use COVID-19 as a tool for political manipulation and shift responsibility onto China will not find support and are doomed to failure.
According to Guo Jiakun, the WHO is a professional international organization and an authoritative institution in global public health. The Chinese diplomat noted that the organization has already expressed regret over the US's withdrawal notice.
“Multilateralism is the cornerstone of the current international order, reflecting the trend of the times and the universal aspirations of people,” stated the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Guo Jiakun added that China will continue to support the leading role of the WHO, deepen international cooperation in public health, strengthen global health governance, and promote the building of a community of hygiene and health for all mankind.
