CHONGQING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) — Liangjiang New Area in southwest China's Chongqing City was officially established Sunday, becoming the first national-level new area in central and western China to be upgraded to an administrative division.
This transformation follows a major administrative restructuring carried out in November 2025, during which the former Jiangbei and Yubei districts of Chongqing were dissolved and merged into the Liangjiang New Area. It covers approximately 1,360 square kilometers and is home to 3.52 million people.
The new area is positioned as Chongqing's main center for implementing major national strategies, developing new-quality productive forces, deepening reforms, expanding high-level opening-up, and improving governance. -0-
