BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) — An editorial to be published Sunday in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) newspaper, Jiefangjun Bao (People's Liberation Army News), pledges to resolutely fight and win the war against corruption in the military.

On Saturday, Chinese authorities announced they had launched an investigation into two high-ranking military officials, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, suspected of serious violations of discipline and the law.

Zhang Youxia is a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC CC) and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC). Liu Zhenli is a member of the CMC and Chief of the Joint Staff of the CMC.

According to the Jiefangjun Bao newspaper, the CPC Central Committee's decision to investigate Zhang Yuxia and Liu Zhenli once again demonstrated the clear position of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Military Commission that in the fight against corruption, no area is off-limits, nothing is left unnoticed, and no tolerance is tolerated.

The article said this demonstrated the party's determination to persistently fight corruption and its firm stance that, regardless of identity or position, anyone involved in corruption will be treated without any leniency.

The editorial characterizes the investigation as an important achievement in the fight against corruption and a significant manifestation of the determination and strength of the Party and the army, adding that it is of great significance for winning this difficult, protracted, and all-out anti-corruption campaign in the armed forces.

As high-ranking party and military officials, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli have gravely betrayed the trust placed in them by the CPC Central Committee and the CMC, and have seriously violated and undermined the system of supreme responsibility vested in the CMC chairman, the Jiefangjun Bao newspaper wrote.

As the editorial points out, they have seriously aggravated the political and corruption problems that threaten the Party's absolute leadership over the armed forces and undermine the foundations of Party governance.

It is noted that they have deeply tarnished the image and authority of the CMC leadership and seriously undermined the political and ideological foundations of the unity and courageous forward movement of all PLA officers and soldiers.

Furthermore, the article states that they have caused enormous damage to the army's political construction efforts, its political environment and overall combat readiness, exerting an extremely detrimental impact on the party, the country and the army.

The Jiefangjun Bao newspaper emphasized that the investigation of Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli will contribute to the comprehensive renewal of the PLA, giving a powerful impetus to the cause of building a strong army.

As the editorial points out, experience has clearly demonstrated that the more intensively the PLA fights corruption, the stronger and cleaner it becomes, and the greater its combat effectiveness. The more thoroughly corruption is eradicated, the more confident and capable the armed forces will be in achieving the goals set for the PLA's centenary.

The Jiefangjun Bao newspaper reports that under the firm leadership of the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, the PLA will resolutely eliminate all forms of inaction and corruption and will always remain a heroic armed force that the Party and the people can fully trust and rely on.

The year 2026 marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) and is a key year on the arduous journey to achieving the goals set for the PLA's centenary, the article said, noting that all armed forces must advance comprehensive stricter internal Party and military governance, adhering to higher standards and more practical measures.

The Jiefangjun Bao editorial calls for continued efforts to confine power within institutional frameworks and for concerted efforts to eradicate the soil and conditions for the emergence of corruption.

The article states that PLA cadres, especially those in leadership positions, should strengthen their ideals and convictions, enhance their political integrity and improve their work style, and firmly implement the important decisions and orders of the CPC Central Committee, the Central Military Commission, and Xi Jinping, who is Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

The armed forces must unite more closely around the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, implement the system of supreme responsibility vested in the Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and accelerate the building of a world-class army, the editorial emphasized. –0–
