Islamabad, January 24 (Xinhua) — At least nine people were killed on Friday when an avalanche hit a house in Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan. One child was rescued, Bilal Faizi, spokesman for the state rescue service 1122, told Xinhua.
The incident occurred in a mountainous area where heavy snowfall triggered an avalanche that buried a family of 10 under snow and rock debris, he said.
Continued heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions have significantly increased the risk of avalanches and similar incidents in mountainous areas, the official emphasized, urging local residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious.
