Moscow, January 23 /Xinhua/ – Russia is stepping up work on building its own nuclear-powered icebreakers, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.
As Vladimir Putin reported, Russia has 34 diesel icebreakers and eight operational nuclear icebreakers. The nuclear icebreakers Chukotka and Leningrad are actively under construction, and the Stalingrad has been laid down. Two more are in the works.
The Russian leader specifically noted that the 150-megawatt nuclear-powered icebreaker "Lider" is being built at the Zvezda shipyard in the Far East. "Construction is proceeding normally, on schedule. I am confident we will receive this icebreaker by 2030," he said.
