OSLO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made a brief statement to the media on Friday during a visit to Greenland's capital Nuuk, emphasizing the importance of cohesion and a common political future within the Kingdom of Denmark.
“I am in Greenland today primarily to demonstrate Denmark’s strong support for the Greenlandic people,” M. Frederiksen said, adding that it had been “a very, very difficult time.”
She emphasized the importance of close cooperation with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, describing their joint efforts as crucial preparation for the kingdom's next steps. "We are now preparing to embark on a diplomatic and political path," the Prime Minister stated.
The visit took place amid growing diplomatic tensions over the future of Greenland. It followed Frederiksen's participation in an emergency European Union summit in Brussels on January 22, as well as her meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte earlier on Friday.
Meanwhile, Danish broadcaster DR reported that Danish troops recently deployed to Greenland were equipped with an unusually large amount of ammunition, including so-called "KUP ammunition," typically used in scenarios involving a coup d'état or hostile invasion.
According to the report, soldiers were ordered to be ready for immediate combat and were considering an extreme "worst-case scenario" involving a potential surprise attack by the United States. DR reported that "there is widespread political will throughout Denmark to fight back" in the event of such a scenario.
