Brussels, January 23 (Xinhua) — The EU will soon unveil a substantial investment package for Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and increase spending on defense equipment adapted to Arctic conditions, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday.

According to her, the EU is working to strengthen relations with Greenland, and the European Commission “will soon present a significant investment package.”

The EU will strengthen cooperation with its partners on Arctic security and will focus defense spending on equipment capable of operating in the Arctic, in particular a European icebreaker, the head of the EC noted.

"We must strengthen our security and defense agreements with regional partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, and Iceland. This has become a genuine geopolitical imperative for Greenland," added von der Leyen.

EU leaders held an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday evening to discuss US threats over Greenland and possible next steps.
