OSLO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — The Danish Defence Command announced on Friday that the multinational military exercise "Arctic Endurance" has begun in Greenland and is scheduled to last until the end of 2026.
According to the official press release, over the past week, military personnel from NATO member countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Iceland and Belgium, have either been or are currently in Greenland, carrying out preparatory activities for the exercise.
The aim of the maneuvers is to maintain and strengthen NATO's operational capacity and alliance cohesion in the Arctic region, the Danish Defence Command said, noting that several other alliance member states have also expressed interest in sending reconnaissance teams to Greenland.
In addition, as stated in a social media post by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's office, the head of the Danish government will travel from Brussels to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Friday to meet with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
The trip followed Frederiksen's participation in an emergency EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte earlier on Friday.
As M. Frederiksen stated on social media following her meeting with M. Rutte, “defense and security in the Arctic is a common issue for the entire alliance.”
Before her departure, M. Frederiksen also reported that Denmark had “begun working with the US government,” adding that details would be clarified in the coming weeks.
As the world's largest island, Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen controlling its defense and foreign policy. Since returning to the US presidency in 2025, Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to "own" Greenland.
