Every watchtower of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Great Wall in Yanchi County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, remembers Gao Wandong and his wife Chen Jing, enthusiasts who dedicated themselves to studying and preserving this heritage.

Yanchi County is located at the junction of the provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The total length of the Great Wall within its territory is 259 kilometers, earning it the nickname "The Open-Air Museum of the Great Wall."

"The Great Wall was our childhood friend," said 55-year-old Gao Wandong. He realized the ancient structure was gradually disappearing or losing its original appearance and urgently needed to be preserved and recorded. So the couple began using their weekends to search for and photograph surviving sections of the wall.

In 2019, Gao Wandong and Chen Jing published the book "Yanchi Great Wall Illustrated." In 2020, they also founded the Great Wall Folk Museum in the county, which is open to the public free of charge.
