Davos, Switzerland, January 22 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced the creation of the so-called "Peace Council." The announcement was made Thursday during a charter signing ceremony for the body at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
This move has raised concerns among observers, who warn that the council's creation could undermine the UN's primacy and the established multilateral peacekeeping structure. Several major world powers and traditional US allies have refused to join the organization.
Speaking at the event, Donald Trump declared that the council he would chair would be able to "do almost anything we want," asserting that the organization would act "in concert with the UN." Critics, however, fear that the creation of the new body could lead to duplication of functions or weaken the existing multilateral system, of which the UN is the core.
Under the current plan, Donald Trump will serve as the council's first chairman, a position he could hold for life. Furthermore, the US President announced that each of the organization's permanent members would contribute $1 billion to fund its activities.
