HAIKOU, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — The combined domestic and international tourist flow to South China's tropical island province of Hainan will reach 106 million by the end of 2025, up 9.1 percent from 2024, local authorities said Wednesday.

According to the Hainan Provincial Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Broadcasting and Sports, total tourist spending rose 10.5 percent year-on-year to 225.4 billion yuan (about $32.4 billion).

In 2025, there was a sharp increase in inbound tourism: inbound tourist flow to Hainan amounted to approximately 1.5 million people, which is 35.2 percent more than in 2024, and overnight tourist flow to Hainan amounted to 5.94 million people, which is 59 percent more than the previous year, the department reported.

For the first time in a year, the number of tourist visits to the province exceeded 100 million, and total tourist spending exceeded 200 billion yuan.

In 2026, Hainan's domestic and international tourist arrivals are expected to increase by 8 percent year-on-year to 115 million, tourism expenditures are expected to reach approximately 248 billion yuan, and inbound tourist arrivals are expected to reach 2 million, up 33.3 percent from 2025.

Chen Tiejun, head of the aforementioned department, stated that this year, Hainan provincial authorities will intensify their efforts to transform the island into an international tourism and consumption hub, focusing on developing leading tourism brands, expanding the supply of high-quality international tourism services, and creating a first-class international consumer environment.
