BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — The two-day 2nd International Youth Short Distance Cross-Country Skiing Competition kicked off in Suihua City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Thursday.
The Zhongguo Xinwenshe news agency reported that more than 300 young athletes from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan participated in the event. The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday.
The competitions take place in the form of relay races or individual short-distance events on international-standard tracks built to take into account the unique terrain of the Beilin District of Suihua City.
Teenage athletes of different age groups will compete for medals in distances of 1.5 km, 2.5 km and 5 km.
Moreover, numerous entertaining snow and ice projects were open to the public at the competition site, including an ice and snow park, ski slopes, and an ice lantern art exhibition, attracting over 10,000 tourists daily.
The competition was jointly organized by the Sports and Fitness Bureau of Suihua City and the People's Government of Beilin District of Suihua City, with the support of the Sports and Fitness Bureau of Heilongjiang Province and the Heilongjiang Provincial Ski Association. -0-
