Damascus, January 20 (Xinhua) — The Syrian Ministry of Defense on Tuesday announced a four-day ceasefire in all operational areas, effective at 8:00 p.m. local time. This measure is part of efforts to uphold the recently reached agreements between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In a statement released by state media, the ministry said the ceasefire was declared in accordance with agreements reached with the SDF and as part of national efforts to maintain security and stability.
The decision comes amid ongoing talks between Syria's interim authorities and the Kurdish-led SDF over administrative and military integration in the country's northeast, particularly in Hasakah province, following weeks of heightened tensions and sporadic clashes.
Syrian officials described the pause in military operations as a confidence-building measure aimed at facilitating dialogue, creating space for the implementation of agreed mechanisms, and preventing further escalation on the ground.
The ceasefire followed a series of political and security developments, including talks on integrating SDF forces into state institutions and resolving sensitive issues related to security, governance, and counterterrorism in northern and eastern Syria.
