Davos, Switzerland, January 20 (Xinhua) — The European Union "should not hesitate" to use its anti-coercion mechanism in response to US threats to impose tariffs over the Greenland situation, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.
E. Macron made the corresponding statement at the annual session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, emphasizing that Europe must become “more realistic” in protecting its interests, as global competition intensifies and rules-based governance weakens.
Speaking about growing trade tensions, the French president criticized the United States for “endlessly piling up new tariffs” and called the approach “fundamentally unacceptable.”
“Especially when they are used as a lever of influence on territorial sovereignty,” the French leader pointed out.
Emmanuel Macron called for a renewed commitment to effective multilateralism. He stated that international law is being flouted today, and collective governance is weakening, creating a world increasingly dominated by the "law of the strongest."
This year, France holds the presidency of the Group of Seven (G7), Macron recalled, promising to use the opportunity to promote open dialogue and practical solutions. He called on partners to avoid trade wars and increased protectionism, which "will only create losers."
