KUNMING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) — A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Qiaojia County in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Monday evening, prompting local authorities to evacuate dozens of residents, although there were no reports of casualties or building collapses.
The earthquake struck at 7:32 PM Beijing time, with its hypocenter at a depth of 10 km. As of 2:00 AM on January 20, local officials reported that 86 people from 31 households had been relocated to temporary shelters.
Cao Shanyou, deputy head of Qiaojia County, said that immediately after the earthquake, authorities launched an emergency response and dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas along with local officials to conduct inspections in 192 villages/communities.
Electricity, telecommunications, reservoirs and water supply services are operating normally, Cao Shanyu said, adding that further assessment of the disaster's impact is ongoing.
The China Earthquake Administration has activated a Level 3 emergency response mechanism for the earthquake in Yunnan Province and dispatched teams to the quake zone to support local authorities' relief and relief efforts.
