Hohhot, January 19 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and 84 injured in an explosion at a factory in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Sunday. The number of missing people has risen to eight, local authorities said on Monday.

The incident occurred at 3:03 PM at Baogang United Steel's sheet metal rolling mill in Baotou. As Vice Mayor Lin Li announced at a briefing, a 650-cubic-meter spherical tank containing saturated water and steam exploded.

According to him, 84 injured people were hospitalized. Five of them suffered serious injuries, while the rest suffered minor head and facial injuries and soft tissue bruises to the extremities. The patients' vital signs are stable.

Following the accident, an emergency response and liquidation center was established. Personnel from the local emergency management agency, fire service, police, health care, and market regulation agencies were mobilized for search and rescue operations.

Production at the affected plant has been suspended. A comprehensive inspection of potential safety hazards is underway at industrial and commercial facilities in Baotou.

An investigation into the environmental impact of the explosion is ongoing. No negative environmental impacts have been identified so far. Utilities and heating for residential buildings in the area have not been affected by the incident.

To determine the cause of the explosion, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region People's Government established a task force. Law enforcement agencies took legal action against those responsible.
