Brussels, January 19 (Xinhua) — European Union leaders will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels on January 22 to discuss US threats related to Greenland, European Commission spokesman Olof Gill announced on Monday.
The summit will assess possible responses to US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on countries that oppose his plan to "own" Greenland.
As O. Gill noted, the EU continues to engage with Washington "at all levels" in response to new tariff threats and is taking "all possible steps" to protect the bloc's economic interests. He added that the use of counter-coercion instruments is also possible.
The European Commission spokesperson emphasized that the priority is dialogue with the United States, not escalation of the conflict. However, "if the threats to impose tariffs are carried out, the European Union has available instruments and is ready to respond," O. Gill added. –0–
