BEIJING, January 19 (Xinhua) — The unemployment rate in China's cities and urban towns (UTs), calculated based on sample surveys, was 5.2 percent by the end of 2025, according to data released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In December of last year alone, this figure was 5.1 percent, according to data from the State Statistical Office.

In December of last year, the unemployment rate among the workforce with local registration in cities and urban-type settlements was 5.3 percent. However, the rate among migrant workers in these settlements was lower – 4.7 percent.

Meanwhile, according to the agency, last month this figure in 31 major cities of the country was 5.1 percent.

The data also showed that the total number of rural migrant workers in China reached 301.15 million in 2025, up 1.42 million from the previous year (an increase of 0.5 percent).
