MEXICO CITY, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) — Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared a 30-day state of siege across the country following a series of coordinated attacks on the country's National Civil Police that left at least seven officers dead, authorities said Sunday.
According to B. Arevalo, the emergency measure is aimed at strengthening the state's fight against criminal groups and ensuring public safety following the outbreak of violence related to prison riots, during which gang members took 46 people hostage in three detention centers. –0–
