Vienna, January 17 (Xinhua) — Five people were killed on Saturday when two avalanches hit the western Austrian state of Salzburg, local media reported.

The first avalanche occurred shortly after midday at an altitude of 2,200 meters in the Bad Hofgastein region. One person was buried and killed in the exposed alpine terrain, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.

In the second incident in the Großarltal valley, an avalanche killed seven people. Four of them were found dead, while three others survived, according to the report.
