Cape Town, January 17 (Xinhua) — A shooting occurred in the small South African town of Marikana, near Cape Town, on Saturday night, leaving seven people dead, local law enforcement officials reported.
According to a statement from the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner's Office, "Police are investigating a shooting in Marikana that left seven people dead: one woman and six men aged between 30 and 50."
"Three other men were injured in the attack," the statement said. "The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment."
The shooting occurred on Saturday at approximately 12:15 a.m. local time. "At this stage, it is believed that the incident is related to extortion in the region. The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made," police reported.
