Cape Town, January 17 (Xinhua) — A shooting occurred in the small South African town of Marikana, near Cape Town, on Saturday night, leaving seven people dead, local law enforcement officials reported.

According to a statement from the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner's Office, "Police are investigating a shooting in Marikana that left seven people dead: one woman and six men aged between 30 and 50."

"Three other men were injured in the attack," the statement said. "The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment."
