Kampala, January 17 (Xinhua) — Uganda's incumbent President Yoweri Museveni has won the presidential election, the Electoral Commission announced Saturday at the National Vote Counting Center during the announcement of the final results.

Announcing the results, commission chairman Simon Byabakama said that Y. Museveni had received 71.6 percent of the votes in the January 15 elections.

Y. Museveni's closest rival, pop singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, received 24.7 percent of the vote.

The remaining votes were distributed among six other presidential candidates. According to the Electoral Commission, the elections were held under heightened security, but overall were calm.
