Tehran, January 17 (Xinhua) — Some citizens in Iran have been given internet access after several days of nationwide shutdowns, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Saturday, without providing further details.
Short message service (SMS) was also restored in the country on Saturday.
On January 8, Iran imposed severe restrictions on global internet access and suspended SMS messaging, citing unrest and terrorist attacks targeting civilians, security forces, and public buildings.
On January 12, media outlets reported, citing Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace, that internet access would remain restricted until authorities confirmed full security had been restored.
Protests have erupted in several Iranian cities since late December due to the sharp devaluation of the Iranian rial. Authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and stated their readiness to address economic problems, while warning against violence, vandalism, and unrest.
