Suzhou, in Jiangsu Province, is a renowned historical and cultural Chinese city. It is located in the central part of the Yangtze River Delta. It borders Shanghai to the east, Zhejiang Province to the south, Lake Taihu to the west, and the Yangtze River to the north. The city's total area is 8,488 square kilometers.
The ancient city of Suzhou was built in 514 BC and has a 2,500-year history. The city is home to 539 cultural monuments and landmarks. Suzhou has long been called an "earthly paradise" due to its mild climate, fertile soil, and abundant resources.
Suzhou is also known as the "Eastern Water City." Water accounts for 42% of the city's total area. The city is home to numerous lakes and rivers.
Suzhou is also a city of gardens. Suzhou's classical parks and gardens, treasures of world culture and art, embody the most valuable elements of Eastern garden art. More than 60 classical parks and gardens are well-preserved in the city. Zhuozhengyuan and Liuyuan Gardens are among the four most famous gardens in China. Nine Suzhou garden complexes, including Zhuozhengyuan, Liuyuan, Wanshiyuan, Shizilin, Yipu, and Ouyuan Gardens, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Suzhou is also famous for its rich culture: painting, calligraphy, sculpture, poetry, etc. Storytelling and singing accompanied by Chinese folk instruments in the Suzhou dialect, kunqu opera, and Suzhou opera are called the "three flowers" of Suzhou culture.
