OSLO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Thursday rejected the United States' claim that the kingdom had agreed to discuss the acquisition of Arctic territory by the United States.
The announcement came after White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials had agreed to establish a working group to continue technical discussions on the Greenland "acquisition" following talks in Washington.
L. L. Rasmussen stated in an interview with the Danish television channel TV 2 that the kingdom had not given its consent to the creation of any technical group to discuss this issue.
He said the proposed working group is intended to explore measures to address US security concerns in the Arctic, but only within the framework of the stated positions of Denmark and Greenland.
Speaking at a White House briefing on Thursday, Leavitt reiterated that US President Donald Trump wants the country to control Greenland, saying the creation of a working group would allow negotiations to continue.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over its defense and foreign policy. The island hosts a United States military base. Since returning to office in 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to "get" Greenland and recently stepped up his threats.
