Riga, January 15 (Xinhua) — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said in Riga on Thursday that Europeans are fully capable of defending their territory from any threat, emphasizing that Greenland is a European territory whose security is inseparable from that of Europe.
Jean-Néphen Barrot arrived in the Latvian capital on January 15 for talks with his Latvian counterpart Baiba Braže on European security issues in light of Washington's plans for Greenland.
At a press conference following the meeting, the French Foreign Minister stated that Greenland is European territory, and security in the Arctic is inseparable from European security.
He said French troops were joining military exercises organised by Denmark in Greenland.
B. Brazhe, in turn, emphasized that the Greenland issue is of great importance in the context of transatlantic security and that direct dialogue between Denmark and the United States is the best way to resolve security issues.
According to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers discussed security and defense in the Euro-Atlantic region, cooperation within the European Union and NATO, support for Ukraine, strengthening the external borders of the EU and NATO, EU budget priorities, and EU enlargement.
