Gaza, January 14 (Xinhua) — A Hamas leadership delegation arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening for talks with the Egyptian side regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, the Palestinian movement announced on Tuesday.
A delegation led by Hamas' Gaza-based leader, Khalil al-Hayya, will hold talks on completing the first phase of the truce, including opening the Rafah border crossing in both directions, Hamas said in a statement.
“The issue of accelerating the transition to the second phase, including the formation of an administrative committee and the completion of the withdrawal of /Israeli/ occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, will also be discussed,” the statement said.
The delegation also plans to meet with leaders of Palestinian forces and factions "to discuss the rapidly evolving political situation and events on the ground in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank," the statement said.
Under the terms of the October 2025 ceasefire agreement, Gaza will be placed under the temporary governance of a committee of Palestinian technocrats, overseen by an international "Peace Council." The agreement stipulates that Hamas must disarm and play no role in the official governance of the territory going forward.
The Rafah crossing, a key crossing between Egypt and Gaza, has been largely closed since May 2024, when Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing. Prior to that, it served as the main exit for Palestinians and a key entry point for humanitarian aid. Israel previously stated that it would reopen the crossing in both directions once Hamas returned all hostages.
