SEOUL, January 14 (Xinhua) — The Republic of Korea (ROK) is considering resuming the suspended military agreement of September 19, 2018, with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Wi Sung-rak, Director of the National Security Directorate of the Presidential Administration, announced on Wednesday.

According to the Renhap news agency, Wi Sung-rak said that restoring the agreement is the “main focus” of the South Korean government and an instruction given by the president.

According to the official, a final decision has not yet been made, as discussions on the issue are ongoing.

The agreement was signed by the defense ministers of the ROK and DPRK during the inter-Korean summit in 2018 with the aim of ending all hostile actions along the border, but it was completely suspended in 2024.

In 2025, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, in his Liberation Day speech, stated that the government would take consistent steps to restore the 2018 military agreement to prevent accidental clashes and build trust in the military sphere. –0–
