OSLO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — The prime ministers of Norway and Sweden expressed support for Denmark on Tuesday following the latest consultations between the Nordic leaders.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre wrote on the social media platform X: "This evening, I had a productive conversation with colleagues from the Nordic countries: we support the Kingdom of Denmark. Only Denmark and Greenland have the right to make decisions on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland."
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson echoed this sentiment on the same platform, posting: "Just spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, along with our Nordic colleagues. We support Denmark and Greenland."
Earlier on Tuesday, Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen held a joint press conference, at which they stated their firm and unanimous rejection of external claims on Greenland.
Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over its defense and foreign policy. The island hosts a United States military base.
Since returning to office in 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to "get" Greenland and has not ruled out the use of force. –0–
