HANGZHOU, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) — Chinese startup Spirit AI said its fundamental embodied artificial intelligence model, Spirit v1.5, has won first place in the global robotics benchmark RoboChallenge, beating a leading model from the United States.

According to the RoboChallenge leaderboard, Spirit v1.5 scored a total of 66.09 points with a task completion rate of 50.33%, outperforming the pi0.5 model developed by the American company Physical Intelligence.

Spirit AI said it has open-sourced its leading model and related resources.

RoboChallenge, often referred to by industry experts as the "global exam" for robots, is a real-world assessment platform that tests embodied AI models in a physical environment. The testing process includes 30 tasks covering everyday operations such as object placement, target recognition, and tool use.

According to publicly available results, in addition to achieving the highest overall score on the platform, Spirit v1.5 was also the only model to achieve a task completion success rate above 50%.

Spirit AI was founded in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province in eastern China, where AI startup DeepSeek and humanoid robot company Unitree Robotics are also based. Spirit AI specializes in embodied AI and robotics research.

Qiu Jiefan, associate professor at Zhejiang University of Technology, noted that the first place victory demonstrates that Spirit v1.5 has demonstrated high overall capabilities in performing general-purpose robotic tasks and their actual implementation.

“The ability to understand and perform multiple tasks in different scenarios is crucial for embodied AI,” Qiu Jiefan said, adding that while the technology is not yet ready for large-scale implementation, this result is an important step towards practical application.

Han Fengtao, founder and CEO of Spirit AI, noted that he expects a wider range of service robots to emerge in the next two to three years.
