MANILA, January 13 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the collapse of a garbage dump in Cebu City in the central Philippines has risen to 11, as rescuers continued searching for 25 missing workers on Tuesday, local authorities said.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Arjival said at a press conference on Monday that all 18 survivors were receiving treatment in hospitals.
“The 72 hours have already passed, but we hope that we still have living people, so we continue rescue operations,” said N. Arkhival.
The landfill collapse occurred last Thursday at a waste processing facility.
The mayor acknowledged concerns from victims' families about the pace of rescue efforts, but said operations must be carried out carefully to avoid further danger.
"The building is actually a metal structure, and all the parts are interconnected. If we try to lift it, people trapped under the rubble could end up trapped in the middle," he said, noting that rescuers are working slowly and carefully, based on assessments from the command center.
He also warned of the fire hazard associated with gas emissions at the construction site. "We can't simply cut the pieces apart. Gas is leaking, and a spark could cause a fire that would have catastrophic consequences for both those trapped under the rubble and our rescuers," added N. Arkhival. –0–
