SEOUL, January 13 (Xinhua) — South Korea's special prosecutor on Tuesday requested the death penalty for impeached former President Yoon Seok-yol on charges of sedition, several local media reported.

Independent Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok's team, responsible for investigating the coup and other related crimes against Yun Seok-yeol, has requested the death penalty for the former president on charges of organizing a coup by declaring an unconstitutional and illegal martial law, despite the absence of a war or similar emergency in the country.

The Seoul Central District Court is expected to issue a verdict in the case in February. –0–
