UN, January 13 /Xinhua/ — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Sun Lei called for efforts to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine and create conditions for a political settlement of the crisis.
The Ukrainian crisis has been going on for almost four years, he noted. Prolonged military action will only lead to more innocent deaths and heightened tensions at the regional and international levels.
“We call on all parties concerned… to facilitate de-escalation and the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure in order to create conditions for a political settlement and to strive for the earliest possible achievement of peace,” he told the Security Council.
Dialogue must prevail over confrontation. All parties should value the hard-won momentum of the latest round of peace talks, he said. "We call on the parties to the conflict to meet each other halfway, continually seek consensus, and seriously and appropriately address each other's security concerns in order to achieve a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement that addresses the root causes of the conflict, creates a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture, and contributes to lasting peace and stability in Europe," Sun Lei noted.
The spread of the crisis has seriously impacted the global economy, he said. China opposes any use of the crisis as a pretext for imposing illegal unilateral sanctions and disrupting normal trade and economic relations. China also opposes any opportunistic attempts to divide the world and create exclusive blocs.
According to him, China's position on the Ukrainian issue has been extremely clear and consistent. Beijing has always sought to promote peace and a political settlement, making tireless efforts to create conditions and achieve consensus in the interests of peace.
China sincerely welcomes all efforts to promote a peaceful resolution of the crisis and will continue to cooperate with other countries to play a constructive role in promoting a political solution, the Chinese diplomat concluded.
