Beijing, January 13 (Xinhua) — The time has come for China and the African Union (AU) to strengthen strategic mutual trust and deepen strategic cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said in an interview with Chinese media on Monday after completing his visits to the AU headquarters, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho.

Wang Yi noted that China and the AU, as the largest developing country and the regional organization with the largest number of developing countries, should make joint efforts to solve current problems, not only to protect the legitimate rights and interests of China and Africa, but also to contribute to world peace and development.

Wang Yi said that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and African countries, the China-Africa Year of People's and Cultural Exchanges, which showcases the achievements of China-Africa cooperation, will bring together youth, media and cultural figures through nearly 600 activities, covering various fields of China-Africa exchanges.

Wang Yi said he was pleased to see new achievements in Africa's development, adding that China's huge market would provide greater opportunities for the continent's development.

The Chinese Foreign Minister called on the international community to pay more attention to Africa and increase investment in it.

China is willing to work with African countries to build institutional platforms and support them in actively exploring successful paths that meet their actual needs, benefit the general public, and make full use of their own resources, Wang Yi said.

According to him, only when China and Africa join forces to advance modernization can the world achieve modernization. Without Africa's modernization, Wang Yi added, the world will not modernize.

The Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized that following the successful Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September 2024, the two sides have worked together to implement its outcomes. He added that, to date, over 90 percent of the goals have been achieved or positive progress has been made.

Wang Yi noted that during his visit, he briefed the African side on the recommendations for developing the 15th Five-Year Plan proposed at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee. He stated that China will continue to be the engine of global growth and is ready to support Africa's development and revitalization.

African leaders welcome China's development achievements and expect China's modernization to benefit Africa, he said.

Wang Yi stressed that during the visit, all African friends reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle and expressed support for Beijing's efforts to achieve national reunification.
