WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump's administration on Monday issued an updated travel warning calling on U.S. citizens to leave Iran immediately amid unrest in the country.
According to a statement from the US "virtual" embassy in Iran, American citizens should be prepared for extended internet outages, plan alternative communications, and, if safe, consider leaving Iran overland to Armenia or Turkey.
The statement also notes that US citizens holding Iranian citizenship must leave Iran using their Iranian passports, as Iranian authorities do not recognize dual citizenship. "US citizens are at significant risk of interrogation, arrest, and detention in Iran," the document emphasizes.
According to the statement, airlines continue to restrict or cancel flights to and from Iran. Several carriers have suspended flights until Friday.
