Astana, January 13 (Xinhua) — Due to expected water shortages, Kazakhstan plans to revise its cropping patterns, including reducing rice and cotton plantings. This was reported on Tuesday by the Kazinform news agency.
As Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, stated at a government briefing, the country's southern regions, including the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions, rely on the transboundary Syr Darya River for approximately 90 percent of their water supply. This year, water reserves in the basin have decreased by 3.9 billion cubic meters compared to last year. A similar reduction—approximately 1.9 billion cubic meters—has been recorded across Kazakhstan's five southern regions.
Specifically, in the Kyzylorda region, the area under rice cultivation is planned to be reduced to 70,000 hectares. In the Turkestan region, rice cultivation is proposed to be reduced to 3,500 hectares, down from 16,000 hectares last year. Similar restrictions, according to the minister, will also affect cotton production.
N. Nurzhigitov noted that since December, consultations have been underway with farmers on the need to switch to water-saving technologies. –0–
