Tbilisi, January 12 (Xinhua) — Georgia's prosecutor's office said on Monday it had reached a plea bargain with former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, slapping him with a five-year prison sentence.

I. Garibashvili was reportedly found guilty of laundering illegal income on a large scale.

In addition to imprisonment, the court sentenced him to an additional fine of 1 million lari (371,700 US dollars).

“He will also have the money obtained through criminal activity and seized during the search of his home confiscated in favor of the state,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Igor Garibashvili admitted to the crime and agreed to the terms of a plea bargain. The prosecutor's office's motion for a plea bargain has already been granted by the court.

I. Garibashvili served as Prime Minister of Georgia from 2013 to 2015 and from 2021 to 2024. He also served as Minister of Internal Affairs and Minister of Defense at various times.
