Moscow, January 12 (Xinhua) — Six people, including two children, died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a house in Russia's Saratov region, the press service of the regional Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (IC) reported on Monday.

"The investigation has preliminarily established that on January 12, 2026, the bodies of six people were discovered in an apartment located in a building on Akademika Zhuk Street in the city of Balakovo: a 45-year-old woman, a 50-year-old man, and their two young sons, ages 9 and 4. The identities of the others are being established," reads a statement published on the department's official Telegram channel.

According to preliminary information, the cause of death could have been carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of working with gas equipment in the house.

Investigators from the Investigative Committee have opened a criminal case. The crime scene is being inspected, witnesses are being questioned, and the necessary forensic examinations have been ordered. –0–
