WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States would "intervene" if Iranian authorities "start killing people" during the ongoing unrest in the country, but ruled out sending troops.
“If they start killing people… we will intervene,” D. Trump told reporters, commenting on the situation in Iran.
“This does not mean sending in troops, but it does mean dealing them a very strong blow in the sore spots,” he added.
D. Trump and other senior US officials have repeatedly warned that Washington will take action if Iran “kills peaceful protesters.”
According to various reports, dozens of people, including demonstrators and security forces, have been killed since the protests began. There is no official death toll.
