Berlin, January 9 (Xinhua) — A ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is a necessary prerequisite for the deployment of international troops to ensure peace, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Thursday, adding that peace remains far from that point.
Such a measure "simply does not work without Russia's consent," he said at a press conference at the Zeon Monastery in southern Germany.
Commenting on the recent meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris, where Britain and France expressed their readiness to send a multinational force to support Ukraine as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, F. Merz maintained a more cautious tone.
