BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) — China and Africa will jointly hold about 600 cultural and people-to-people exchanges in 2026 to expand exchanges and enrichment between the two civilizations and promote mutual understanding and rapprochement between peoples, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Friday.
Mao Ning made the statement at a regular press conference, presenting relevant information on the opening ceremony of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, which took place on Thursday at the headquarters of the African Union.
Holding the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges in 2026 is an important consensus reached by leaders of both sides at the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, a Chinese diplomat said.
According to the statement, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the participants of the opening ceremony of the China-Africa Year of Humanitarian Exchanges, calling on the parties to take advantage of the upcoming Year to develop traditional friendship, strengthen mutual enrichment between civilizations, enhance people-to-people exchanges, especially among young people, deepen the exchange of experience in public administration, and jointly promote modernization.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the opening ceremony.
