Beijing, January 9 (Xinhua) — China's State Council has launched an investigation and assessment of market competition in the country's food delivery platform industry, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced on Friday.

According to the department, the investigation was launched by the Office of the Commission for the Prevention of Monopolies and Unfair Competition under the State Council in accordance with the PRC Anti-Monopoly Law.

A commission official noted that the food delivery industry plays a vital role in stimulating consumption, expanding employment, and promoting innovation. However, the industry has recently begun to face serious challenges, including excessive subsidies, price wars, and difficulties managing traffic flows.

"This practice puts pressure on the real economy, exacerbates involutionary competition within the industry, and provokes a strong reaction from various sectors of society," the official representative stated. He added that the goal of the investigation is to promote lawful, compliant, and fair competition in the food delivery platform industry, as well as to establish a market order characterized by quality pricing and fair competition.

The assessment will include on-site inspections, face-to-face interviews and questionnaires to gain a deep understanding of the competitive behavior of these platforms, as well as soliciting input from stakeholders, including sellers, workers and consumers, he said.

It is noted that food delivery platforms should actively cooperate with market research and assessment, participate in market competition in good faith, and contribute to innovation and healthy development of the industry.
