Baku, January 9 (Xinhua) — The official opening ceremony of the Khizi-Absheron wind farm, built by China's PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited, took place in Baku on Thursday. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev praised the completion and commissioning of the project, emphasizing its crucial role in national development and the country's transition from traditional energy sources to green energy.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Ilham Aliyev praised the high professionalism of the Chinese builders and the Chinese company and welcomed Chinese investment in the country's economy. He noted that the modernization and development of Azerbaijan's energy system have been identified as a key priority in recent years.
In her speech at the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lu Mei noted that China and Azerbaijan have reached an important consensus on strengthening cooperation in green development. Chinese companies are actively involved in the development of renewable energy in Azerbaijan. China's 15th Five-Year Plan begins this year, and China stands ready to work hand in hand with Azerbaijan to jointly build the Green Silk Road and share the opportunities arising from China's development with all countries.
According to the Chinese company, the Khizi-Absheron wind farm is located in eastern Azerbaijan. Construction began in March 2024, and full completion and commissioning were scheduled for late December 2025. The project includes 37 wind turbines with a total capacity of 240 MW, making it the largest wind energy project in Azerbaijan and a benchmark for local renewable energy development.
