BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — China is committed to working with countries in the South China Sea (SCS) region to build the SCS into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said Thursday.

Zhang Xiaogang made the statement in response to a question about the recent rescue of a Filipino fisherman by a Chinese naval vessel in the South China Sea.

He noted that the crew of a naval vessel conducting regular patrols in waters under Chinese jurisdiction rescued a stranded Filipino fisherman. Many Filipinos expressed gratitude and praised this noble act by the Chinese side.

However, a Philippine Navy spokesman slandered the rescue operation as "political propaganda."

Zhang Xiaogang noted that some individuals in the Philippines are trying to use their fishermen as pawns to commit violations and provocations at sea, as well as for inflammatory propaganda, adding that with these actions, the Philippine side is recklessly exposing its fishermen to danger, without regard for their livelihoods and safety.

These individuals also make groundless accusations against China, demonstrating complete hypocrisy and callousness, Zhang Xiaogang said.

"Facts speak louder than words, and justice prevails in people's hearts," the Chinese Defense Ministry official emphasized.

Zhang Xiaogang reaffirmed China's unwavering determination to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, assuring that China is committed to cooperating with countries in the South China Sea region to build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation.
