Addis Ababa, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the capital Addis Ababa on Thursday, during which the two sides agreed to strengthen mutual support and synergy between the two countries' development strategies.
Abiy Ahmed asked Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, to convey New Year's greetings and sincere greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. He emphasized that Ethiopia views China as a reliable, close brother and strategic partner, that the two countries have long supported each other, and that their bilateral relations are characterized by strong momentum.
According to Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia is grateful to China for its long-standing support for the country's socio-economic development and highly appreciates China's efforts to implement the outcomes of the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCAC).
Reiterating Ethiopia's commitment to the one-China principle, the Prime Minister said the Ethiopian side expects to maintain close high-level exchanges with China, deepen practical cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, new energy, artificial intelligence and maritime affairs, strengthen mutual support in regional and international issues, and promote the steady growth of bilateral ties.
Wang Yi, for his part, conveyed warm greetings from Chinese leaders to Abiy Ahmed, noting that the Ethiopian prime minister is a long-standing friend of the Chinese people. The Chinese diplomat noted that under Abiy Ahmed's leadership, the Ethiopian people remain united, and the country is making rapid progress in national development.
Addis Ababa is changing every day, Wang Yi noted, congratulating the Ethiopian side on this.
He said China intends to work with Ethiopia to implement the important agreements reached between the two leaders, firmly support each other, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, deepen the exchange of governance experience, and continuously elevate the China-Ethiopia all-weather strategic partnership to new heights.
The Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized Ethiopia's position at the forefront of China-Africa cooperation and stated that the two sides must jointly implement the outcomes of the FCAC Beijing summit. He called for the effective implementation of China's zero-tariff policy on imports from all African countries with which China has established diplomatic relations, the acceleration of trade and economic cooperation, strengthening cooperation in infrastructure, green industry, and the digital economy, and promoting the high-quality construction of the China-Africa Belt and Road Initiative.
Wang Yi expressed hope that Ethiopia will provide a favorable environment for investment and business for Chinese companies. He added that China expects Ethiopia, as a major African country, to play an important role in regional and international affairs.
The Chinese Foreign Minister added that China is willing to continue to promote the implementation of the Concept of Peaceful Development of the Horn of Africa and play a constructive role in promoting peace, stability, and mutually beneficial cooperation in the region.
