BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — About 800 athletes from Central Asian countries and China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) gathered in Urumqi, capital of the region, to participate in the second Guest Indoor Athletics Competition, which kicked off on Wednesday and will last two days.

According to the news platform chinanews.com.cn, the competition will be held separately for men and women in three age categories: adults, youth, and adolescents. Participants will compete in approximately 70 events, including sprinting, middle- and long-distance running, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, and shot put.

As part of the competition, a training camp was also organized for athletes from Central Asian countries, which served as a useful platform for discussing athletic skills and exchanging experiences in sports competition among athletes from China and these countries.

“We hope that holding such an international sporting event will promote deeper cooperation between China and the Central Asian countries in the field of physical education and sports, and thereby stimulate the development of physical education and sports in these countries, especially among young people and adolescents,” noted Chen Jun, head of the Ergun Sports Training Center under the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region’s Administration of Physical Education and Sports. -0-
