Tehran, January 8 (Xinhua) — Internet outages occurred in the Iranian capital Tehran and several other parts of the country on Thursday, according to the internet monitoring group NetBlocks.

According to the NetBlocks website, “real-time data shows that Iran is currently experiencing a countrywide internet shutdown.”

A Xinhua correspondent in Tehran confirmed the outage, which began at approximately 8:15 p.m. local time / 4:45 p.m. GMT.

The internet shutdown is believed to be caused by ongoing protests in several Iranian cities since late last month, including in Tehran on Thursday, amid a sharp fall in the rial and long-standing economic problems. –0–
