Helsinki, January 7 (Xinhua) — Greenland's status is "not negotiable," Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on Tuesday, emphasizing that decisions regarding the autonomous territory rest solely with Denmark and Greenland.
"Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. Only Denmark and Greenland make decisions regarding the island," A. Stubb told Finnish media in Paris, where he was participating in a meeting of the "coalition of the willing" on Ukraine.
The Finnish leader noted that a year ago, few could have imagined the need for such discussions. "We support Denmark," he reiterated.
Responding to a question about Venezuela, A. Stubb said the US is pursuing its own narrow interests there. He warned that disregarding international law in one place could set a precedent elsewhere.
"The consequences could be widespread and unpredictable. We are moving toward a more dangerous world," he added.
A. Stubb called for a return to common rules, including respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights.
US President Donald Trump said in a phone interview with The Atlantic on Sunday that his country "absolutely" needs Greenland.
In December 2025, he announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as US special envoy for Greenland, leading to renewed diplomatic tensions between Washington and Copenhagen.
Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in gaining control of Greenland, saying he would not rule out using “military or economic coercion” to achieve this goal.
A. Stubb wrote on the social media site X on Sunday that no one can make decisions for Greenland and Denmark except themselves, supporting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's call for the United States to stop threatening the kingdom. "Our Scandinavian friend Denmark and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have our full support," Stubb added. –0–
