Beijing, January 7 (Xinhua) — The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra performed a New Year's concert on Monday evening at the Grand Theatre in Qionghai, Hainan Province, southern China. The virtuoso performance of the Russian musicians delighted local residents and visitors from across China.
According to local media, the world-renowned orchestra has chosen Qionghai as one of the highlights of its China tour, which is sure to enhance the popularity and appeal of this coastal city, which, with its beautiful natural scenery and growing openness, is actively promoting its image as a “Living Room for International Cultural Exchange.”
The concert opened with the solemn Chinese composition "Hongqi Song" (Ode to the Red Flag), performed by the orchestra under the direction of renowned conductor Freddy Cadena. The musicians then performed a series of classical works, including the overture to the opera "Ruslan and Lyudmila," "Dawn on the Moscow River," "The Nightingale," and "On the Beautiful Blue Danube."
The highlights were soprano Anna Khrapko's performance of a fragment from the opera "The Nightingale" and baritone Alexander Sukhanov's performance of the song "Chinese Land" in Chinese.
To thunderous applause and ovations from the audience, the symphony orchestra, conducted by Freddie Cadena, performed additional numbers – “Moscow Nights” and “Katyusha,” which are very popular among several generations of Chinese, as well as the Chinese song “Good News Arrived at the Border Village from Beijing.”
“It’s so wonderful that you can enjoy symphonic performances of such a high world standard without leaving the country!” said music teacher Ms. Wang, who traveled especially from Haikou (the administrative center of Hainan Province) to attend the concert.
"This wonderful concert allowed us to deeply experience the charisma of Russian art and also brought a vibrant cultural flavor to the New Year's celebration," said a city resident named Chen after the concert.
